Somebody needs to take the first step. Fortunately, Alois Rupprechter did, and that’s why the Achensee beer was invented.
It all started more than ten years ago. The owner of the Hotel Karlwirt took time out with his wife and children and went to Upper Austria. As he was driving through the village to the hotel, he noticed an inn with a brewing kettle on its facade. Curious, he decided to stop by and was told that the beer is home-brewed. He ordered a beer and after he took the first sip he was pleasantly surprised.
The first beer
At the beginning of December 2010, Alois and his brother-in-law have barricaded themselves into the brewery for four days. The release of their first beer, a wheat beer, in January 2011 marked a significant moment.
Today, the brewery produces a range of beers under the brand “Achensee Bier”, among them naturally cloudy light beer, light and dark wheat beer and a variety of seasonal beers. The beers are served at the Langlaufstüberl and at the Hotel Karlwirt. Meanwhile the brewery is running to full capacity, and an increase in production would require expanding the facilities. Alois wants to keep the brewery small, focusing on quality rather than quantity.

With wheat and barley malt from Bamberg and spring water from the Karwendel, brewer Alois Rupprechter produces a naturally cloudy wheat bear according to the German purity law. The top-fermented beer is available in light and dark style and its fruity taste will have your taste buds tingling. In 2019, Achenseebier received the Falstaff award for the most popular mircobrewery in Tirol.
