As temperatures drop in winter and snow is falling, many of us prefer spending time indoors. How about visiting a museum? The Achensee holiday region has many a treasure to discover.
The history of Tiroler Steinöl® (shale oil) and life on a single farmhouse
The visitor centre Vitalberg in Pertisau tells the fascinating story of the shale oil mining family Albrecht. The Sixenhof museum of local history is also worth a visit. Discover the life of farmers in a typical single farmhouse, a building that housed the family’s living space, stable and barn under the same roof.
Museums in Maurach
Maurach has two museums: the Notburga Museum – the only museum in Austria dedicated to a female saint – and the Achensee Museum World. The Notburga museum tells the life story of Tirol’s only female saint. St. Notburga is often regarded as the patron saint of agriculture and maids. In the former vicarage, which together with the pilgrimage church and the sacristan’s house forms an intact ensemble of baroque architecture, the oldest documents of Notburga worship are shown, as well as exhibits of baroque art and processional objects. The Achensee Museum world is called “village within a village”. In the various areas of the museum, the technology and craftsmanship of bygone days and the nature around Lake Achensee can be explored.
