So many exciting recreational opportunities – so little time! With the huge array of activities we’re completely spoilt for choice with things to do. But today we are sure: we’ll go out on the SUP. We’re not quite sure how it is pronounced, but that doesn’t matter. SUP stands for “standup paddle boarding” and it’s great fun. What you do is stand a huge, wide surfboard and glide over the water using the paddle. Keeping the balance is not difficult at all, it sounds more complicated than it is!
SUP is a great outdoor adventure for the whole family to enjoy. Kids can let off some steam and organize races while the adults paddle leisurely over the lake, adoring the stunning panorama and the fish in the lake. Alternatively, the SUP also works like an air mattress: Move out onto the lake and bask in the sun. And if you get too hot on the board just take the plunge into the cool water. Just wonderful!
A popular SUP tour starts in the Buchau and leads counterclockwise along the lakeshore. If you’re lucky you will have a little tailwind and you can save the more beautiful western bank for the way back. At Camping Achensee Schwarzenau, you cross the lake and paddle back to the south. This tour covers about 13 kilometres but there are also shorter tours. For more information about different tours or courses, please ask at the rental stations. More tour suggestions can be found here.
SUPs are available to hire in Maurach at the Atoll Achensee, or at Wassersportzentrum Achensee. Information is available at SUP-Club Achensee. In Achenkirch, SUPs are available to hire at Hotel Kronthaler. The Karlinger Hof offers SUP courses and SUP rental in cooperation with the boat house Pertisau and the boat rental Achensee north. The surfing school learn2kite also offers SUP boards to hire and SUP courses.
About the author: This year, Katharina went out on the water with a SUP for the very first time and felt immediately comfortable: “I was really surprised how quickly you get used to paddle boarding and keeping your balance. It was a lot of fun, but watch out – don’t forget sun protection! The reflection from the water makes the sun’s rays even stronger.”
