Steinberg am Rofan

Any place which describes itself as ‘the loveliest end of the world’, as Steinberg proudly does, must have something special to offer – and the little town has just that.

Sommerpanoramakarte der Region Achensee - Steinberg

Around 10 kilometres away from Achensee, at 1000 metres altitude, Steinberg am Rofan, whose origins extend to the La Tène period, provides enchantment with experiences in the natural surroundings which are beyond compare. As a wide, breezy high mountain valley, surrounded by impressive mountains, Steinberg provides endless space to exercise and relax in its unique landscape. Whether that be while winter hiking, skiing, cross-country skiing, hiking, mountain biking, tobogganing or during a ski tour – it is the pristine natural surroundings which are to the fore.

A snow-shoe hike through the forests becomes a convivial get-together with a stop-off for some mulled wine, or what about tobogganing on the illuminated natural toboggan run with some ‘Hüttengaudi’ celebrations afterwards in the inn ‘Waldhäusl’.
The Rofan Mountains provide countless ski touring options from Steinberg. Short, leisurely tours are on offer, as are long, strenuous tours where there is over 1000 metres of climbing to negotiate.

Steinberg is the starting point for lots of mountain tours; an ascent of the Guffert (2196 metres), the Unnütz (2077 metres) or a hike to Enteralm at 1324 metres is particularly worthwhile. The romantic ravine at Steinberger Ache is also worth a visit as a trip to see the inscriptions in the cave at the Schneidjoch mountain. In 1947, near a small stream, an eight-lined inscription in the rock was discovered here. The mysterious characters, which are presumed to come from the North Etruscan alphabet, puzzle researchers to this day. It is presumed that they are a reference to a holy stream.
