It’s not all about downhill and cross-country skiing at Lake Achensee. There’s just as much fun off the slopes in the region around Tirol’s largest lake.
The scenic Karwendel valleys in Pertisau as well as the Oberautal and Unterautal valleys in Achenkirch are situated in the Nature Park Karwendel and are ideal for leisurely strolls or easy hikes. Visitors can relax and enjoy the fresh Tirolean mountain air. The inns and mountain huts nestled around Lake Achensee provide welcome rest and much-deserved refreshments. Visitors can warm up at the tiled stove while fortifying themselves with Tirolean delicacies and mulled wine.
Those who prefer being chauffeured through the villages and valleys, can enjoy the magnificent landscape during a horse sleigh ride. A perfect opportunity for a family outing or a romantic night ride for couples.
There’s lots to see at the museums at Lake Achensee. Immerse yourself in “ancient times”, for example at the Tirolean Shale Oil Visitor Centre “Vitalberg” where visitors can learn about the history of the shale oil miners and production of the Tirolean Shale Oil. The Achensee Museum World in Maurach shows many interesting exhibits in their various showrooms.
The sky glider Airrofan is an absolute must for thrill-seekers. Located close to the mountain station of the Rofan cable car, visitors are drawn uphill for about 200 metres and then the sky glider rushes back to the starting point at a speed of 80 kilometres per hour.
